How often do you think high school students and young adults in King County use marijuana? The answer is “MOST Steer Clear.” Voices from the student run radio station, Mercer Island High School’s KMIH 88.9 The Bridge hit the airwaves this month to share why they, like MOST young people in King County steer clear of using marijuana, alcohol, and other substances.

The MOST Steer Clear campaign from Neighborhood House Seattle highlights that the majority of youth and young adults in our region do not use substances. When asked about pattern of use in the past year, 68% of young adults in King County either do not use marijuana at all or use it less than once per month, and 89% of young adults that use marijuana do not drive after use (2019 WA Young Adult Health Survey). Similarly, most Mercer Island High School students self-report never using marijuana in their lifetime (2018 WA Healthy Youth Survey).

In collaboration with the Mercer Island Healthy Youth Initiative students from 88.9 The Bridge, shared their reasons for not using substances. Some testimonials highlight the importance of staying focused and motivated to reach your goals, while others are concerned with the risks of mental health issues, impaired driving, and the potential for addiction.

Joe Bryant, the Broadcast Media Instructor at Mercer Island High School, and the General Manager at KMIH, shared “I am proud of them for undertaking these messages. Our students are taking this opportunity to remind their peers to make good choices, especially as we all come out of what has been an unpresented time.”

When asked why radio is a good fit this campaign, student contributor Sidh answered, “Radio is influential in the daily lives of so many people without them noticing. This gives ALL broadcasters a responsibility to feed listeners true information and helpful stories that benefit them.” Listen to the live broadcasts of MIHA sports, community announcements, great music and more on KMIH-FM 88.9 FM.
